The Hot Topic on CBD Topicals: Can CBD Lotion Make You Fail a Drug Test?
Can CBD Lotion Make You Fail a Drug Test?
Over the past years, employers have been administering mandatory drug testing in both the public and private sectors.
Until the recent influx in CBD products and services, it generally was not an issue. There are four methods of testing for THC, which is the psychoactive compound that provides the euphoria feeling with cannabis.
Drug testing for marijuana is determined through the appearance of the THC metabolites as opposed to CBD.
The question then is whether THC metabolites can accumulate from the administration of topical CBDs like lotions and cause you to fail a drug test.
It’s All in the THC
THC is what gets you into trouble if it is found within the system.
By law, the CBD products should only have a level of 0.3 THC. Considering the law, if the consumers are taking CBD, which has the legal limit, then it would not be likely that they are going to fail a drug test.
On the other hand, it is a different scenario if customers are utilizing unregulated CBD products that fail to meet the requirements of the government.
The various forms of drug tests may produce different results, and the most commonly used drug test is done by testing the urine.
For one to safely pass a urine drug test, the amount of THC in the body is only legal up to 50 ng/ml.
That is the cut off as suggested by the National Institute of Health and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
The majority of the legal services and employers follow these guidelines as the leading standard, considering it is more likely to be upheld in court.
But…Does CBD Lotion Make me Fail a Drug Test?
Failing a drug test after getting massage services or applying CBD lotions is not likely, according to experts.
It’s close to impossible for a large amount of THC to be absorbed and metabolized by the body and then shows up in a drug test.
Of course, some situations may change this as the use of penetration enhancers and transdermal patches and a higher than legal limit within the product.
The topical CBD products are typically used for:
- skin conditions,
- physical discomfort, and
- inflammations
The cannabidiols function through receptors in the subcutaneous skin layers. Penetration into the bloodstream is not necessary or common as per the desired localized effects.
The skin is designed to keep things out, which makes it probable that the evaluation of the urine and blood will not find significant levels of the cannabidiols penetrating the skin following application.
Caution is Still Considered
That being said, there is still unease for those who are drug tested at work.
If the employment is dependent on a clean reading, then it would be reasonable to accept the hesitation or resistance to CBD usage or services.
Precautionary measures could suggest the introduction of the conversation and alerting employers to the usage of CBDs and the drug testing implications.
As the markets continue growing, the changes in drug testing would continue to follow.
For now, it will be a challenging situation for everyone affected through the drug testing of workers.
