What is CBD Oil Used For?

What is CBD Oil?

CBD oil is a natural oil which is extracted from the cannabis plant that many people would know also produces hemp and marijuana. Due to its close association with the illicit drug, CBD oil has earned some controversy. Primarily used for recreational purposes, marijuana has not gained the most positive reputation. While still considered a “soft” drug, it has been shown to cause some undesirable side effects such as paranoia, sleepiness, and excessive hunger after use. Weight loss and weight gain as well as anxiety and depression have also been shown to be associated with prolonged use.

For these reasons, marijuana and the cannabis plants they come from are still illegal in many parts of the world. Unfortunately, this has meant that CBD oil has been swept up in this controversy, as it has been lumped in with recreational marijuana. But the two substances are vastly different, most notably CBD oil does not contain THC, the active ingredient in marijuana that is responsible for the “high” feeling.

So then — what is CBD oil used for? Importantly, CBD oil has been shown to have many applications in the treatment of medical conditions. Everything from mental health concerns to even cancer have been responsive to CBD oil treatment in studies.

Is it safe?

Unlike marijuana, CBD oil has no side effects. No study has ever found any signs of unwanted effects from its use. Overdose risk has also been found to be incredibly low, with some research even concluding that overdose is impossible. It’s also not addictive, with no evidence of dependency being found in any study to date. As noted above, CBD oil, if extracted correctly, also contains no THC, so will not impair function or thinking by producing that famous “high” feeling associated with marijuana.

Treatment of medical conditions

As stated above, CBD oil has proven incredible effectiveness in the treatment of many medical conditions. Chronic pain sufferers in particular have long looked to marijuana to relieve their symptoms, being dissatisfied with more traditional pain relief methods. The issue with this was the “high” from the THC in marijuana, which was problematic for some users. CBD oil entered the market and was a viable option for these people as it enabled them to treat their pain with no other unwanted side effects. Since then, CBD oil has also proven its effectiveness in treating other conditions.

Some mental health concerns such as anxiety and depression have shown responsiveness to CBD oil as a treatment. The naturally calming effects of CBD oil tend to minimize the symptoms of these issues. A similar effect has also been seen in treatment of high blood pressure. Research has also found positive results in sufferers of post-traumatic stress disorder.

CBD oil has natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which also makes it very useful in treating conditions based on bacteria or inflammation. Remarkably, even conditions as serious as cancer have shown a positive response to the use of CBD oil as treatment, particularly skin cancer. CBD oil has also demonstrated some effectiveness in the treatment of acne, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis.

It’s important to note that research into CBD oil as a medical treatment is still ongoing, and much more is needed. However initial results have been very promising, with many users swearing by it as a treatment.

Recreational use

Despite its close association to marijuana, CBD oil is not generally used for recreational purposes. While regular users do report feelings of improved mood, productivity, motivation, relaxation, and calm, the effects are not deemed strong enough to constitute what would deem recreational use.

Other uses

Some exciting recent studies have also found that CBD oil has positive medical effects on animals, with users reporting improved health of their pets from using CBD based products. Many similar conditions in humans have also been treated in dogs and cats, using CBD oil, with results being very promising. Further research is required, but if accurate, could mean huge savings in vet bills and better quality of life for people’s pets.
